"Getting Ahead In Your Career and on The Homefront by Striking the Balance"
By Neeti Dewan.

I am at work, sitting at my desk, on a telephone call that seems to go on and on.

I constantly look at my watch.  I’ve got to get home by 5:30 pm to take my son and daughter to their weekly art class. Finally, I have no choice but to end the call before all the issues have been resolved.  I hear the irritation in the voice of the person on the other end of the line.

I gather my belongings, and am headed out the door when a member of my team calls.  She says she needs a document right away for a meeting.  I drop my coat and handbag on my desk.  I log back onto my computer, and call home to tell my kids to meet me outside the house.  I locate the document on my computer, and send it to the team member.

Traffic is worse than usual, and when I pull up in front of the house, the kids jump into the backseat.  More traffic.  I drop the kids off at their art class, and rush off again to meet my husband at a nearby restaurant.  I slide into the booth, and my phone rings.  It is a call from my mother.  I have to take it. My husband studies his menu while I help my mom with a question about her bank statement.

Have you ever had days like this?  Do you feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day?  Do you sometimes feel pulled in all directions?  If you’re a woman, I’ll bet you said “yes.”

The stress that comes from juggling our many roles makes it especially important that we carve out time and space for ourselves.  I love to get a massage, or spend a weekend away with a group of firends and loved ones. A change in scenery can give us a new perspective, and an hour of pampering can reduce the level of physical and mental tension we feel.  Keeping all the parts of your life in balance is essential to your wellbeing.
